Understanding Japanese salary deductions

Income tax
A progressive tax on annual taxable income, after employment-income, basic and social-insurance deductions. Higher rates apply as taxable income rises. The 2.1% reconstruction surtax applies to the tax, not your salary.
Resident tax
Typically based on the previous calendar year’s income. Tokyo ward and prefectural income-based taxes, local fixed charges and forest tax are included. Your municipality’s notice gives the actual amount.
Health insurance
Your employee share depends on your insurer, prefecture and standard remuneration band. This calculator uses Kyokai Kenpo’s Tokyo schedule, rather than an uncapped percentage of gross pay.
Employees’ pension
Usually shared equally with your employer. The employee contribution is 9.15% of standard monthly remuneration, with an ordinary ceiling of ¥650,000. Ordinary contributions stop at age 70.
Employment insurance
Supports eligible workers during unemployment and other covered situations. The FY2026 employee rate for general business is 0.5% of covered wages.
Care & childcare support
Employee long-term care premiums apply at ages 40–64; municipal premiums apply separately from 65. A new 0.115% employee child and childcare support contribution applies from April 2026, whether or not you have children.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between gross and net salary?

Gross salary is your pay before deductions. Estimated net salary is gross pay minus the taxes and employee insurance contributions listed in the breakdown. Living expenses are separate.

Resident tax generally uses your previous calendar year’s income and your address on 1 January. This tool has no prior-year input, so it assumes the same earnings and uses current premiums as a proxy for prior social-insurance deductions. New arrivals or people who changed jobs may see a large difference.

These five inputs cannot confirm spouse or dependent eligibility. Japanese individual taxation does not use different Single and Married brackets. No automatic family deductions are applied; your actual tax may be lower after eligible deductions are verified.

Pay is mapped to an official standard remuneration band. The employee premium is calculated using that band, with the applicable pension ceiling. Your employer’s existing assessed band can differ from one inferred from this month’s pay.

The employee long-term care premium starts at 40 and ends at 65. From 65, separately assessed municipal care premiums are excluded from this payroll estimate. Ordinary employees’ pension premiums stop at 70. From 75, a different medical insurance system applies; this calculator does not issue a net estimate for that system.

No. National income tax is an annual estimate divided by 12, using the final 2026 rules that take effect at year-end. Monthly withholding, bonuses, assessed insurance bands, personal deductions and actual prior-year income can change your payslip.
