What is the Honjo International Scholarship?

The Honjo Foundation was established by Mr. Masanori Honjo (the founder of Ito En, Ltd.) with a vision to nurture global leaders who can bridge the gap between Japan and the rest of the world.

Unlike MEXT, which is a government scholarship, Honjo is a Direct Application scholarship. This means you don’t need to wait for university nominations or embassy rounds. You apply directly to the foundation, and they pick the best of the best.

Financial Benefits: How Much Money Will You Get?

Brother, the money part is “Zabardast.” The foundation provides a tiered stipend based on the shortest period required to complete your degree:

  1. ¥230,000 per month: For 1 to 2-year degree programs (Standard Master’s).
  2. ¥210,000 per month: For 3-year degree programs.
  3. ¥180,000 per month: For 4 to 5-year degree programs (Standard PhD).

Additional Perks:

  • Travel Grants: They provide funds for you to attend international conferences.
  • No Repayment: This is a grant, not a loan. You don’t owe them anything back!
  • Networking: You get access to a massive alumni network and “International Friendship” events.

Eligibility Criteria: Are You Eligible?

Don’t make a “Dijain” of your application by applying if you don’t meet these rules. There are No Exceptions to the age limits.

  • Nationality: You must be a non-Japanese citizen.
  • Age Limit:
    • Master’s: Under 30 years old at the start of the program.
    • PhD: Under 35 years old at the start of the program.
  • Academic Status: You must be enrolled or applying for a Graduate program in a Japanese university starting in April or Fall 2026.
  • Career Goal: You must have a “strong will” to serve your home country after graduation.
  • Language Skills: You must be able to conduct an everyday conversation in Japanese because the interview is conducted only in Japanese.

Required Documents (The Portfolio)

Honjo asks for a digital portfolio. You need to upload everything to their Online Application System.

  1. Academic Transcripts: Undergraduate and Graduate (if applicable).
  2. Research Proposal: You must use the HISF template and write it in Japanese. If you aren’t confident, you can attach an English version in addition to the Japanese one.
  3. Recommendation Letter: From your academic supervisor (current or previous). It must have their signature or seal.
  4. 2-Minute Video: A video of you explaining your research plan. Your face must be visible!
  5. Face Photo: Professional and clear (.jpg or.gif).

Mastering the Research Proposal: B-1, B-2, and B-3

This is where most students get “Jabran” confused. The template has three main sections that you need to nail:

  • B-1: Research Content & Schedule: What are you going to identify? When? What is the ultimate goal?
  • B-2: Home Country Contribution: How will your studies in Japan benefit your home country (India, for example)? Be specific!
  • B-3: Achievements: Your past research, academic awards, and social activities (volunteering, sports, etc.).

The Selection Process & Interview Tips

Selection is a two-stage process: Document Screening and then the Interview.

Akash’s Pro Tips for the Interview:

  1. Japanese is Key: The interview is exclusively in Japanese. You don’t need N1 level, but you should be able to explain your research and yourself clearly in “Desu/Masu” form.
  2. Attire: Wear a formal black or navy suit. First impressions in Japan are everything, Bawa!
  3. The “Why Japan?” Question: Be ready to explain why you chose Japan over the US or Europe. Focus on Japan’s technological leadership in your field.
  4. Online Option: If you are outside Japan, the interview can be done via video call (Skype/Zoom).
Comparison: Honjo vs. MEXT

“Bhai, which one is better?” Both are fully funded, but look at the difference:

  • Stipend: Honjo (up to ¥230k) > MEXT (approx. ¥143k–¥145k).
  • Direct Entry: Honjo allows you to apply directly to the foundation. MEXT usually requires Embassy or University recommendation.
  • Tuition: MEXT covers 100% tuition directly. Honjo provides a massive stipend, and you often use that to pay tuition or apply for a tuition waiver at your university.
Conclusion

f you have a solid research plan and can speak basic Japanese, the Honjo Scholarship is a “Chaka-chak” way to settle your life in Japan. It gives you more financial freedom than almost any other scholarship.

Action Plan for you:

  1. Get your admission/acceptance letter from a Japanese university.
  2. Start drafting your research plan in Japanese.
  3. Shoot your 2-minute pitch video.

Don’t do “Chale” (waste time), start preparing now for the April window! If you have questions, drop them in the comments or hit me up on Instagram.

All the best, Bawa! Japan is waiting for you!
